I've been compounding since 1999, so about 24 years.
I started wanting to work in the pharmacy when I was five-years old. I would come to the pharmacy and sweep the basement and stock the vials. Watching the pharmacist and technicians work always interested me.
I learned about compounding in 1999 when our pharmacy first started to compound. I really didn’t get in-depth knowledge until I started attending PCCA events.
The ability to help patients with their personalized needs. So many people need things outside the normal cookie-cutter mold of medicine and compounding gives us the opportunities to fill those gaps for patients.
Any hormone formulas are my favorite. Seeing how much they have improved the quality of life of our patients is what makes them my favorite. For example, we had a patient who was not getting the right hormone absorption from troche or capsules. We suggested switching to a rapid dissolve tablet (RDT) and used Progesterone 200 mg Rapid Dissolve Tablet (RDT-Plus™) (PCCA Formula #12751). The patient’s levels improved, as well as the patient’s symptoms.
I had a friend who was in severe pain after having their tonsils removed. My friend had a prescription for tetracaine lollipops, but the local pharmacies were not able to fill it. After hours and that same weekend, we got a call to see if we could. We were able to compound the prescription and deliver it to them. They were so happy and later told us how much those lollipops helped to relieve their pain.
Continue to learn and broaden your knowledge base. Learn as much as you can about different compounds and chemicals and how they interact. Look for opportunities in your pharmacy to grow and do what you can to help your pharmacy grow.
We invite you to listen to The Mortar & Pestle – Tech Talk podcast, when PCCA Director of Member Engagement Erin Michael, MBA, MS, CPhT, FAPC, discusses pharmacy technician compounding with Doug on October 17 — Pharmacy Technician Day.
